Family Bike Ride along the
Minute Man National Historical Park’s Battle Road
Celebrate the Park’s 50th Anniversary by having your kids recreate part of Paul Revere’s Historic ride – by bicycle!

Date: June 21, 2009
Time: 10am (ready to ride, so arrive early) to 1pm
Where: Minute Man National Historic Park Visitor’s Center, Route 2A, Lexington, MA
Note: A bicycle in good working order and a helmet is required for both parents and kids.  Rain will cancel the event (call 800-576-3622 if the weather is questionable).

smNEMBALogo2Parents and their kids are invited to recreate — and finish — Paul Revere’s famous ride from Lexington to Concord along the historic Battle Road by bicycle.  Come experience the Minute Man National Historical Park and enjoy a gentle bike ride with your kids along the scenic and rural dirt path that meanders through Lexington, Lincoln and Concord. The ride will be appropriate for any child who can ride on two-wheels without assistance for at least an hour or so.  The younger riders will ride for 3 miles with frequent stops at various historic sites, including the Hartwell Tavern where they will encounter National Park interpreters in 18th c. costume. The older kids will stop at the Tavern for a tour and continue on to the end of the Battle Road at the Meriam’s Corner, riding a total of 8 miles. Complimentary juice, snacks and souvenirs will be provided to the kids.

This ride is organized by the New England Mountain Bike Association and co-sponsored by the National Park Service and the Friends of Minute Man National Park as part of the 50th anniversary of the Minute Man National Historical Park.

While not mandatory, please register you and your family by calling 800-57-NEMBA.  This gives us an idea of how many ride leaders we’ll need for a fun and safe ride.  At least one parent or guardian must accompany their kids.  A mountain bike is not necessary; however, the ride will be on a dirt path and having slightly fat tires is recommended.  Helmets are required for every rider, young and old.

From I-95: Take exit 30B. You will be on Route 2A west. The park is 1-mile west off of the ramp.
From Mass Pike: Take I-95 Exit (exit 14) and follow above directions.
From Route 2: Follow Route 2 to I-95 North. Proceed north one exit to 30B. Follow directions above

The skies may have been a dreary, rainy  gray but spirits were high as crowds assembled at the Meriam House in Concord for Saturday’s observance.  Visitors were able to escape the drizzle by stepping inside the Nathan Meriam House, which was open for viewing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families were also  entertained by a participatory play “Hats Off! A Homespun Tribute” that highlighted the many contributions made by our fore-mothers during the Revolutionary War. For the stalwart guests, the Concord Independent Battery was present behind the house, answering questions about the history of the group and the remarkable brass cannons on display.

img_1647At 1:00 p.m sharp, those same cannons issued a loud ‘BOOM!’ and rings of smoke billowed forth as the cannon roar announced the start of the march from Ripley School. The sound of fife & drum music could be heard in the distance as representatives from Bedford, Concord, Carlisle, Charlestown, Acton militia and minutemen, the Sons of the American Revolution, as well as local Girl Scout troops, took their first steps along the parade route.  Members of the Mer(r)iam Family also marched behind a banner proudly displaying their family name. Music was provided by 4-H Fife & Drum, Middlesex County Volunteers, and Sudbury Fife & Drum. Park Superintendent Nancy Nelson was joined by this year’s honorees and parade marshal as the parade wound up the street and ended at the foundation of the original Meriam house that stood at the corner on April 19, 1775.

A brief ceremony with musical selections and wreath laying with musket salute followed the parade. The marchers then stepped off the field, reversed their marching route and disappeared into the distance with the sound of fife and drum music still lingering in the air. For many, this was the second of three stops during the day, with Bedford Pole Capping in the morning, and Paul Revere’s Capture occuring later that afternoon. For others, this was their one brush with history for the day and surely it was time well spent!

Spring has surely arrived as cool damp mornings give way to sunny afternoons lately. All these April showers should provide a veritable carpet of May flowers in the Buttrick Garden and elsewhere throughout the Park.

With the spring weather comes a return of the annual Meriam’s Corner Exercise, scheduled for this Saturday, April 11th at 1:00 p.m.  Join us for this afternoon event to recognize the remarkable action that took place here on April 19, 1775.

The Town of Concord joined by area minute companies and fife and drum units pay remembrance to the fight at Meriam’s Corner that marked the beginning of the six-hour running battle back to Boston.
